A Substance Use Assessment is an interview between you and a certified substance use therapist. Usually, these assessments are court-ordered and requested by lawyers, judges, employers, family members, or schools after an event such as an accident, legal charge, or changes in behavior.

Substance Use Assessments are conducted by licensed Substance Abuse professionals.  Formerly known as AODA assessments, these give a diagnostic impression of substance abuse disorder (SUD) or dependence, based on current diagnostic criteria as defined by the Diagnostic Statistical Manual.  Recommendations are made based on the results of the assessment. These recommendations could include Early Intervention classes, outpatient services, inpatient substance use treatment or residential based services for substance use.

During the assessment, which can last from one to two hours, our counselors conduct conversational interviews about your use of alcohol and drugs, as well as other topics. Topics discussed include the impact of alcohol and/or drugs on your life, the impact of these substances on your relationships, job, etc., and your overall well-being.  At the end of the assessment, our counselors discuss the findings and recommend appropriate treatment, if applicable. These recommendations can be voluntarily followed, or they may be enforced by the court, depending on your results. 

Treatment recommendations may include:

• Drug or alcohol education classes
• Outpatient treatment
• Residential treatment
• Individual, couple or family counseling

You’ll receive all recommendations and findings in a detailed written report. The report can be sent to third-parties, at your request, such as a judge or lawyers. The report will not be shared with your medical insurance provider unless requested otherwise and is not accepted by the Department of Motor Vehicles for the purpose of a drivers safety plan.

Substance Use Counseling is available at many of our clinics.  Payment arrangements are made at the time of referral, and may include self-pay or third party reimbursement. Length of service is determined on an individual basis and may include participation in groups or individual sessions. Your counselor will discuss the recommended services in detail.
